Events, Community: 'LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS' Barb Steury 2/20/2002 |

Last November Mr Mushnick was devoured by Audrey (the plant!)It was in the Flat River Community Players presentation of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS Book and Lyrics by Howard Ashman Music by Alan Menken Based on the film by Roger Corman Screenplay by Charles Griffith It all began last summer when Julie Chapman-Jakeway (director) contacted me to play the piano in the orchestra pit for the production. Julie who grew up in Sheridan and was our receptionist for many years is known by many of you. The music is tons of fun and I had been exposed to the score years before as our daughter, Niki, was one of the Doo-Wop girls in the CMHS production of the show. This fall Niki was starting her second year at MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine and when she heard they were doing LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, she HAD to audition. Once again she got one of the Doo-Wop girls. Julie showed up at the office one day and asked Doc if he would audition for Mr Mushnick....Doc said there was NO WAY because one of the family members had to stay sane when everyone “stressed out” prior to the performances. Since Doc and I went to high school together, I knew that he had been VERY active in the drama program there. Not to mention he did PIRATES OF PENZANCE years ago with the Flat River Community Players. So, I decided to try (in a subtle way) asking him to revisit the idea of being Mr Mushnick in this production with Niki and I. That was one of those evenings where I had a stern talking to about how irresponsible I was being, blah, blah, blah. A couple nights later, Niki walked in the house and said, “You know dad I think it would really be fun to be in a play with you and you would make such a GREAT Mr Mushnick.” (Does anyone NOT see the writing on the wall?) Doc danced (and not bad for someone who grew up Mennonite), sang (he LOVES to sing) and ultimately got so engrossed in his character that the staff along with Niki and I would hear Mr Mushnick’s dialect on a daily basis. I never got to see the production because I was behind the stage in the orchestra pit, but I could hear the cast and it was a joy. A special time was having Lori & David (our Wisconsin kids) come to the final performance...we could count on them to laugh at our jokes. It was a wonderful experience only to leave us with the challenge of getting the entire family together in a production in the future. The Doo-Wop Girls in the Photo with Mr Mushnick are: Barb Headley (in the yellow), Val VanderMark (in the blue), Linzi Tallian (in the orange), and Niki (in the green). | |||||||||||||||
